IN CHARACTER
Name: Rosethorn (born Nivalin Greenhow)
Canon: Circle of Magic
Canon Point: between Street Magic and Battle Magic
Age: 37

History: HERE

Personality: Rosethorn’s family background left her wary of shows of affection, at least until she trusts someone very much. Her family valued her magic, her power with plants, more highly than they valued Niva herself. She was viewed as a useful tool rather than a daughter or a sister, and they lied when they told her otherwise. Eventually they stopped lying. Rosethorn was held prisoner in her family home, and she uses memories of her father to brace herself when she falters or feels scared. She withstood him. She'll withstand whatever else she faces too. There are certainly people she loves now, but Rosethorn rarely feels the need to say it or the desire to hear it said.

Rosethorn is persistent, stubborn, and completely unwilling to abandon a task or a path due to obstacles and frustrations. What started as a competitive game with a rival at the university turned into something much more serious, and she devoted years of study and effort to the extremely dangerous work of disease analysis and diagnosis. Rosethorn was the driving force that kept them from giving up, even when they lost several of their number to disease and injury. In addition to her own dogged determination, it's really important to her that people's efforts and sacrifices mean something.

She is an Earth Temple Dedicate Initiate of the Living Circle religion. Essentially what this means is that she's dedicated herself to service of the Green Man and Mila of the Grain, as well as to Living Circle's principles. The responsibilities inherent in this include defense of temple grounds and relics as well as of any innocents seeking protection. She can't turn her back on people in need, and she can't do harm to anyone who hasn't invited it on themselves by initiating violence. She is also required to teach untrained mages if she finds them, at least until she can get them into the hands of a teacher whose abilities more closely match theirs.

Rosethorn hates fighting, but she's an accomplished battle mage. She prefers healing, at least when she has medicines that can do some good. There is little Rosethorn hates more than being helpless as she attempts to care for those she cannot do anything to heal. Her power is limited to plants. She can work with plants directly rather than through medicines, and seeing people suffer when she can’t do the same for them is incredibly frustrating. She helps failing farms, travels when needed to investigate the death of plants on an island, and in general uses her power to help those who need it.

She tends to be intimidating, but her bark is worse than her bite except when someone really deserves it. Her first introduction to her foster children involved a threat to hang them by their heels in the well if they damaged anything in her garden. She would never have done it, of course. The reason she gave Briar was, "I water my plants from that well," but harming innocents also goes against Rosethorn's beliefs and vows. She's gentle with animals, the sick and wounded, and people whose suffering or fears are well-founded, but Rosethorn is still at the top of the list of people none of her charges ever want to cross.

She has little patience and no desire to curb her sharp tongue unless absolutely necessary. When asked if she found negotiating with locals annoying during their travels, Rosethorn answered, "Yes, but my vows say I have to be nice to people sometimes, for the good of my soul. You haven't taken vows. Scat."

She's good at reading motivations and cutting through to the reasons people do things. She is able to understand other people's point of view, and she usually takes that into account before she turns her tongue on them. During her period in quarantine after discovering that one of the workers had stolen necessary medical supplies, Rosethorn explained to Briar the variety of reasons people worked in Urda’s House, the place of healing, in the poorest part of Summersea. "Some care. Some do it because it's fashionable these days to take an interest in the Mire. Some because it's the only work they can get. Between guild charity funds and the duke, they're paid a decent wage. Some cared once, but they've seen so much poverty that their hearts broke." Rosethorn tries to maintain perspective, even though she'll tolerate callousness or foolishness from no one.

Besides her faith, several important relationships act as anchors for Rosethorn. She has friends she values, and then she has her family. Rosethorn's lover, Lark, and her foster children Briar, Tris, Sandry, and Daja mean the world to Rosethorn. There is nothing she wouldn't do for them. Rosethorn and Lark's relationship is close on a number of levels. Lark is dedicated to the same gods as Rosethorn. They share values, they share a home, and their personalities balance well, Lark’s openly nurturing side contrasting with Rosethorn’s prickly intimidation until people get to know Rosethorn better. Briar is her protege as well as her foster son. He is her boy, and though they rarely verbally express affection, it's obvious to anyone with eyes. She also cares a lot for Briar's student Evvy.

Abilities/Skills: Rosethorn is a plant mage. Her power is what is described in her world as "ambient magic," meaning that it comes from an aspect of the natural world rather than spells and books. Rosethorn has an instinctive and ever-present connection to plants. She can feel what they feel, she can communicate with them, they like her, thrive for her, and lean toward her as if she's the sun. This is without even actively engaging her power to manipulate them.

She can also force them to rapid growth, though she doesn't make use of this in her garden because it sabotages their strength in the long run. This can be useful for replacing seeds for a grain crop, or for growing vine barricades, or in combat. She can pull a building apart with rapidly grown vines, or grow vines with more-than-a-foot-long thorns that kill attackers. She can wither or sprout wooden structures and objects, even when they are moving at rapid speeds, such as arrows in flight.

Plants that she works with can be made resistant to molds, fungus, insects, disease... she can do a lot to coax plants to thrive.

Rosethorn's favorite place to be is in a garden, but she also makes medicine with what she grows there. Many of her formulas would be effective even if made by someone else, but her plant magic makes them more so. She can produce a wide range of plant-based medicines, knows how to triage injuries and illnesses, and has spent years on medical research. Her primary area of expertise is in contagious diseases. She was part of a team that developed human essence, which eliminates the need for human testing of new cures. Rosethorn wrote her country's infectious disease protocols, she has experience analyzing diseases and finding keys to creating a cure.

    SAMPLES
Network Sample: What bleat-brained buffoon managed to crossbreed cats with trees, and then compressed the result down to shakkan size? It shouldn't be possible in the first place. Even if it were easy, whoever did it has no more sense than a fruit fly, and no respect for plants or animals.

It's a good thing kittens are so adaptable. These ones have no idea they're something new. Cats shouldn't remember hanging from branches like fruit, and I shouldn't understand what's going on in their tiny heads. The kittens are still part plant.
