Religion

Rosethorn’s faith is Living Circle, and Dedicates of the religion choose to become Earth, Air, Water, or Fire dedicates based on their own personalities and values. Rosethorn is a Dedicate Initiate, a mage whose power is used in service of her faith.

The gods of the Living Circle religion include a god and goddess of each element:

Earth
Mila of the Grain (cultivated fields, crops, weaving and spinning)
The Green Man (wilder growth, sometimes chaotic, unrestrained, and even dangerous)

Water
Yanna Healtouch (love and healing), sometimes referred to as Yanna Pain-taker
Runog of the Deep (oceans, rivers, streams)

Air
Asaia Bird-winged (birds, intellect, learning)
Tuhengri Stormlord (storms, wind, weather)

Fire
Shurri Firesword (war, law, justice, martial arts)
Hakkoi the Smith (smiths, volcanoes, earthquakes)

Rosethorn’s primary deities are the Green Man and Mila of the Grain. When she says prayers, that’s usually who she’s praying to, though as a medicine maker Yanna Healtouch is also a frequent recipient. As situations warrant it, she may call on other gods, but the two earth deities in particular are the ones to whom she’s dedicated herself.

As a Living Circle Dedicate, Rosethorn has certain responsibilities. She makes her medicines available regardless of whether people can afford to buy them. Living Circle temples offer free medical care to anyone who comes to their doors seeking it. She will fight to defend her temple and the harbor city near it as well as any innocents she finds while traveling. She can't, however, hurt or kill anyone except in defense of self or others. Her vows mean a lot to her, and one of their meanings is that she won’t turn away from danger if it means protecting either her religion or people in need. She'll also travel at the behest of those who come to the temple seeking help she can offer.

Rosethorn serves on the mage-council of her temple, which entails following and enforcing all the ethical codes that come with a mage's medallion. She will enforce these codes and responsibilities or enact the harsh penalties for breaking them regardless of the offender's identity; even her protege and foster son Briar is not immune to this role. Educating untrained mages is one of the responsibilities inherent in a mage's medallion, and Rosethorn would see it as her duty to do so, even if the person's power varies wildly from her own.

There are relics of power that accompany each of the elements, and these were briefly placed in Rosethorn’s care for transportation and safekeeping during the war in Gyongxe. Very few people are able to carry them, Rosethorns qualifications being her strongmindedness and her dedication to her faith rather than her raw magical power.
